Conference September 12th - 14th 1990
Location: Loosdrecht, The Netherlands
Theme: The foundation of ENOS (European Network of Occupational Social Work)

The foundation of an European Network of Occupational Social Work (ENOS) began in April 1990 with a letter of introduction as follows:

With the support of the European Centre for Social Welfare Policy and Research in Vienna, an inaugural meeting will be held on September 12th, 13th and 14th 1990 in Loosdrecht, The Netherlands, in order to set up the European Network of Occupational Social Work (ENOS). This initiative is partly inspired by the pending unification of Europe, in 1992. The aim of the European Network of Occupational Social Work is to give the occupational social workers in Europe an opportunity to exchange experiences, expertise, skills and ideas regarding occupational social work. Ultimately the aim is to harmonise the vision and content of occupational social work in the European countries. To this end a meeting will be organised for about 50 European participants, all of whom hold key positions in their own countries (e.g. the head of an OSW team, OSW educational staff, members of the board of OSW, etc.).

The committee reserves the right to restrict the number of the participants if there are too many applicants. The participants are expected to contribute to the meeting. They are to present a summary of the state of affairs in their own country. The guidelines for this presentation will be issued. Each participant must be able to report back in his/her country after the meeting. In addition the participants should be prepared to continue promoting the interests of ENOS in the future.

Summary

Why a European Network on Occupational Social Work (ENOS)? Untill the foundation of ENOS, occupational social work (OSW) was evolving primarily at a national level. Informal contact between countries however indicated that there were significant international variations in terms of the task, aims and position of OSW. As a result the founding members formed the opinion that it would be mutually beneficial to provide a forum where an exchange of ideas and expertise could be fostered. The pending unification of Europe provided an ideal backdrop for the forging of new links.

The participants of the first European Network Meeting on Occcupational Social Work, are joined in strong support of the newly formed network named ENOS and drawn a Resolution.

Issues for the attention of ENOS:

- Exchange of experiences.
- The cultural influence on task and position of the occupational social worker.
- Task and function description of the osw within organizations.
- Integration of occupational social work within organizations.
