Summary
The first ENOS conference was attended by approximately 30 participants from six countries. By the time of the second conference these numbers had grown to 90 participants from nine countries. While providing the opportunity for the exchange of ideas and expertise, the conference additionally provided participants with the chance to focus their attention on important issues of practice such as the varying roles of osw; differing methods, areas of expertise and expectations, osw and power within the organisation, osw on a contractual basis, marketing of osw and interdisciplinary cooperation.
Issues arising in sub-group discussions: Social problems can have their origins in the structure of an organisation, in an economic situation or in the personality of the worker. It is vital therefore that the osw must attend to general problem within the organisation as well as those presented by the individual worker. OSW has a role to play in influencing working conditions, work relationships and management styles. OSW needs to support management with appropriate information and feedback. Attention must be given to the on-going development of osw with regard to consultation, supervision and continuing education.
The success of osw within the company is dependent upon the promotion of the right image;
osw must therefore invest in developing an appropriate method of internal communication, using a language which can be understood.
